The History of Now That’s What I Call Music
Now That’s What I Call Music is a compilation album series first released in the United Kingdom on 28 November 1983, by the Sony-owned record label Now! Records. The idea for the project was conceived by British entrepreneur and music executive Richard Branson, who then approached Simon Fuller—the manager of the Spice Girls—to help him develop the concept.
Fuller created the brand name and marketing campaign for the albums, which featured television adverts, posters, and magazine articles using images of everyday people going about their daily business while lip-syncing to tracks from available albums. The first album—entitled Now That’s What I Call Music!—featured thirty-six hits from artists including Abba, Duran Duran, Blondie, Michael Jackson, Madonna, Yazoo, and Billy Joel.
The project proved to be so successful that further volumes were released in quick succession over the next two years; by 1985, eight Now!-branded albums had been released in the UK. The series has continued uninterrupted since then; as of September 2018 there have been 100 main series releases (not counting special issues or themed releases), and over 500 million copies have been sold worldwide.
